Please be aware when searching for resources, that there are NO GRANTS (free money) AVAILABLE FROM THE US GOVERNMENT or the Small Business Administration (or anyone else really) to help you start your business. Anyone trying to sell you books or courses to tell you how to get a grant from the government is running a scam. These books are nothing but a list of places/agencies to inquire about grants, and you don’t need to spend money on CDs or books to get that information -- it’s all on the web.
Government grants: the only grants being offered to businesses at this time are for non-profit agencies. The only thing available from the Small Business Administration for a “for profit” business is a small business loan which must be repaid, and which requires a lengthy and somewhat complex application process.
Also, do NOT spend your money on registration fees for the National Grants Conferences which makes its way around to various cities throughout the year. This is a scam that has hurt many people around the country, and the fees run from about $600 to over $1000 for a “lifetime membership” for services that never materialize -- fees that are apparently set by whomever happens to be giving the seminar that day. And then apparently they eventually begin to charge you $29.95 a month forever at some point. You can read about some of the losses incurred by people just like you if you click here. I have heard complaints about this group that date back to 2001 (though I think they were probably taking the money of innocent people before that even). If you’ve been “taken” by these people, contact your State Attorney General to lodge a formal complaint. They travel, like gypsies -- that means they’re hard to catch -- but if enough people complain, sooner or later the Attorneys General will be able to find a way to stop them.
However, no matter where you live, there are legitimate and free or inexpensive resources, seminars and workshops that you can attend to help you start or expand your small or home-based business. You may have to travel to a nearby city to access those resources, but they are there for the taking.
We are in the process of contacting organizations, colleges, and business development centers to provide a one-stop list of as much of this information as possible. Educational opportunities for small business owners and start-ups are listed in the calendar below. Some are free, and some require small fees or supply costs.
