An Inviting Business
Can Evolve From Love
Many dream of a business of their own. But coming up with a business idea and putting that idea into action can be a challenge that stops the dream cold. In the final analysis, the most successful and happiest entrepreneurs are those who fashion a business that incorporates their personal needs, talents and skills.
Anita Kronowitz always thought of herself as a creative person -- a creative person who was stuck in an uninspiring professional rut. Back in the early 80's, "I was working as a paralegal. It was a living, but I was so bored. There was no creativity required for what I was doing. It was just a job. I needed something more in my life, but really didn't know what to do about it."
By 1985, Anita's accountant told her that she needed to start a business of some kind. "I was working to pay taxes -- I needed some deductions." Thus began her search for a business concept that would allow her to put some creativity into her work life. "Actually it was friends who helped me decide where to begin."
In conversations with the people who knew her best, one common thread was growing. When asked for opinions and suggestions, again and again friends spoke of her love of sending beautiful cards and thoughtful greetings -- sometimes for no reason at all. "I've always loved to send cards to people. I loved finding them. I loved writing them. It made me feel good and apparently it really made them feel good too. So that became the basis for my new business concept."
From that concept came Anita's working plan of offering an invitation addressing service. She set her first goal -- to learn hand calligraphy and to begin building the business. Three years later in 1988, with her calligraphy services in big demand, Anita was getting busy and found the need to speed the process by making a major investment in a calligraphy machine. "That's when I decided to take my service to the next level by offering invitations for sale as well, and Eloquent Elephant was born."
Today, Anita's business is not only a successful local business in the Los Angeles area, but also enjoys a brisk business on the Internet as well (www.eloquentelephant.invitations.com). "I do a good business selling birth announcements and children's birthday invitations; but my staple business is definitely in selling and addressing wedding invitations. People love the look of hand-addressed calligraphy for wedding invitations; but in today's world, it's a luxury of time that most people just can't afford, and a skill that the average person doesn't have. I have the means to offer them the next best thing to hand calligraphy and some lovely choices of invitations besides."
Is a business of her own all she hoped it would be? "Absolutely! For me, this is just a perfect choice for a business. What could possibly be better than helping people invite or announce the most important events of their lives?"
